He played club rugby in Victoria until his mid-late 20's and then commenced refereeing here in the early 1970's. </p><p>John was VRRA Treasurer in 1983 and Secretary in 1984 and 1985.</p><p>John spent time as Registrar, was on the Appointments Board, and was an active referee coach. John's record keeping has helped our recent efforts to collate a written history of the association greatly.</p><p>For a linkage to a current face around the grounds - John was one of the first refs that Al Grigg made contact with when he moved to Melbourne in the early 90's and helped him settle into Victorian rugby.</p><p><br /></p>Marikahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158820318731011640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-860760222584464994.post-69097313135385571472023-05-09T19:24:00.002+10:002023-05-09T19:24:48.409+10:00Meet Caleb and Theo<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIydANmHGThLOT_ItYvD3I7q9zJmEvL_ctdRXpoK0-ur8C452cCk9J0gZldMqfaeIgIUdujjP6v2X4v7N7mfXfgbojium9qkszc_I8EVwT2eKMyq_1AT1DWbAnFwZjIVAOWXtJcjpTKq9rIBkcDTXXe7Mt2nJ_yCX8wtnpYawHlnqGSPv8QYax5FPZ/s640/Theo%20and%20Caleb%20May%202023.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIydANmHGThLOT_ItYvD3I7q9zJmEvL_ctdRXpoK0-ur8C452cCk9J0gZldMqfaeIgIUdujjP6v2X4v7N7mfXfgbojium9qkszc_I8EVwT2eKMyq_1AT1DWbAnFwZjIVAOWXtJcjpTKq9rIBkcDTXXe7Mt2nJ_yCX8wtnpYawHlnqGSPv8QYax5FPZ/s320/Theo%20and%20Caleb%20May%202023.JPEG" width="240" /></a></div>Caleb and Theo have had a great start to their refereeing in 2023 - here they are ready to run on to AAMI Park for the half time matches at the Rebels v Brumbies! To join the VRRA go to myaccount.rugby.com.au > Register > Find a Club > Victorian Referees. Then email Rob on vrrarecandret@gmail.com and let him know your general availability so he can appoint you to appropriate games. eg: you play or you're a parent who's involved with a particular school or club, you need to use public transport. This is critical so that we can plan to have a mentor or coach there for your first game. As well as morale support, they will bring green shirt, whistle, and other resources (although ideally we try to get that to you before game day).</div><div><br /></div><b>Q: How many games to I have to do to be accredited?</b><div><b>A:</b> It depends. Typically its around 5, but depending on your competence it may be fewer or more. In your first few games we aim to have a referee coach or mentor watch you, they will guide you on what you need to work on, and at the right time request a ref coach to complete a competency assessment. After you've completed online law exam and safety requirements, and this on-field assessment is done, you'll be given your full orange shirt uniform.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Q: When do I get paid?</b></div><div><b>A:</b> Referee payments are processed by Rugby Victoria twice a season and paid directly to referees. Rugby Victoria will send you documents to complete, before payments can be made. Referees can opt to have their payments redirected to the VRRA to contribute to education and development activities, by sending Rugby Victoria written confirmation. Unless you paid your VRRA association fees upfront when registering, your first 3 match payments will go to the VRRA as your association fee.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Q: What should I expect from a referee coach?</b></div><div><b>A:</b> The role of a referee coach is to support and encourage referee development. They provide advice on ways to improve your refereeing, can help you identify trends in the game, and answer any of your questions. Before the match they might ask you what you're working on so that they can look for that, and provide you with feedback. At the end of the game, they will discuss key aspects, and should provide you with written feedback within a few days of the game. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>Q: How do I keep learning about refereeing?</b></div><div><b>A:</b> Come to ref training (Mondays 6:30pm at Albert Park), and our monthly meetings (see calendar on this page for place and dates) - these are great places for discussion with other referees. </div><div><br /></div><div><div><b>Q: How do I stay accredited?</b></div><div><b>A:</b> Each year you will need to complete an online Season Ready course that encompasses elements of law and game management guidelines. Along with Smart Rugby every two years these are the key elements of accreditation.</div></div>Marikahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158820318731011640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-860760222584464994.post-90719692399391350852022-03-27T19:29:00.003+11:002022-03-27T19:30:12.872+11:00Meet Cameryn: here to help with your game reviews<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuIYdr4ybBIxnrJSU6cX_AxZXbAlepkinxhywfY0v0CEj7hxCYyMbyINMmzoTqYgUNuwDVvdClUfrqKs9qIuGUakzovyp-edPlkPL0b0lik87z9zKPVCWYfo1O0W0bHyTW2nI2-nR0Enrd7tONMJ5MMSyYZ5pyrLfs05MCT7d2LYsKYm2k_Z8DE6Yl/s1321/Northern%2010s%202022%20Cameryn.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1321" height="262" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuIYdr4ybBIxnrJSU6cX_AxZXbAlepkinxhywfY0v0CEj7hxCYyMbyINMmzoTqYgUNuwDVvdClUfrqKs9qIuGUakzovyp-edPlkPL0b0lik87z9zKPVCWYfo1O0W0bHyTW2nI2-nR0Enrd7tONMJ5MMSyYZ5pyrLfs05MCT7d2LYsKYm2k_Z8DE6Yl/s320/Northern%2010s%202022%20Cameryn.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br />There are two non negotiable's in referee progression: physical fitness and game reviews. invited to vote for their favourite All Time Rebels XV to join in the 10 year
celebration of our local (and for some, favourite) Super team.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>
A comprehensive list was compiled that included every player to earn a cap for
the team over the 10 years - 165 in total.
</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>
Like most elections with non compulsory voting, the turnout was slightly
disappointing. But as we all know, if you don't vote you forgo your right to
complain about the outcome. i.e. don't blame us for the results if you didn't
vote 😄</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>
The final results were an interesting mix, with nostalgia appearing to play a
factor in the forward pack, whilst the backline was dominated by current and
more recent selections. Perhaps this says something about the recruitment
strategies across the years with a focus put on the forward pack initially and
a bit of a revolving door in the back line?
</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>
A number of players who won Wallaby caps missed out on making this auspicious
team which was an interesting outcome.

and meeting houses, that list office bearers and award winners. These physical
reminders invoke a sense of history, foundation, and a way for new members to
connect with past members. <br /><br />We don't have a clubhouse and our typical
off field presence in this day-and-age is online. So I'd like to introduce to
you our

Take a look around for some familiar names - many popping up over and over.<br /><br />These
records have been compiled from hard copy and digital meeting minutes, actual
shields, assorted documentation and a little bit of member memories. If you spot
typos, or know first names of people that can replace an initial, or have

A great way to do this is
to look at a full games worth of scrums and plan what your communications,
actions and decisions should be at each one. Context matters - that's why
you watch a whole games worth.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">Use this
<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SX0zbs514RgIxJBRwz4wuhwSWfFkphm6" target="_blank">scrum review template </a>(in Library > Learning Resources) to list out each scrum, the action the referee should do, what the players
are doing, what talk from the ref is required and a description of context.</div>

To use as a development tool - watch one of your own games. What you choose
at home on paper, might not be what you did on the day - but this is how you

In 2017, he joined the VRRA Committee as Treasurer, and in 2018 moved to the role of VP Recruitment & Retention. He was then again elected to that position for 2019 and despite his illness he insisted on continuing in the role. It was this spirit of commitment that led him to being awarded the VRRA 2019 Best Clubman Award.<br /><br />Aside from these formal roles, there was nothing that Brett didn't want to get involved in. A keen supporter of the Saturday Shuffle - he was very happy to cross town for a big breakfast even if it meant sprints with Shannon! Brett was first to volunteer for any tournament rugby. He would be there with not just a flag and whistle but enough sweets to keep everyone going all day or weekend. And his super powered camp chair was always on offer to all.<br /><br />Brett was a strong supporter of the Victorian rugby youth, actively seeking out opportunities where kids could referee and play, no more so than with his own son Finn. Brett shared his love of all things rugby with Finn supporting him to be a better player and referee.<br /><br />To read about Brett’s equal immersion in club rugby see this <a href="https://www.facebook.com/PowerHouseRugby/posts/3315593341786396">Power House tribute</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div><span id="docs-internal-guid-a5fedc09-7fff-0a6d-c3e0-0f9ec23e8f3a" style="background-color: transparent; From player to coach, to administrator and supporter, he was immersed in the game at all levels.<br /><br />David was a member of the VRRA between 1965 and 1967 and continued to referee when needed after this time. When needed? David would often get a call from the appointments officer saying he was appointed to a game.... coincidentally a game he was intending to play in. With the choice of either refereeing the game or the game not going ahead, of course he would referee it for the benefit of his club and teammates.<br /><br />For a great more detail about David’s playing and coaching roles and influences, please do read this great dialogue <a href="https://moorabbinrams.com/blogs/news/vale-david-ian-bertram-14-01-1938-22-05-2020">shared by the Moorabbin Rams</a>.<br /><br />Marikahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15158820318731011640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-860760222584464994.post-60604765011158564742020-05-13T16:23:00.000+10:002020-05-13T16:23:05.132+10:00Education meeting for May - Application of U19 law<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Although the season start is postponed to an unknown time, and its format is yet to be determined, the message from your VRRA Committee is <b>Be ready to ref. </b><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In tonight's committee meeting (see those happy faces!) we discussed all the usual portfolio activities and although some things are on hold, in general, our goal is to be ready to ref as soon as games are scheduled.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We regret to inform you that Travis and Nick have had to step down from their committee roles due to work commitments, but in the same breath we welcome Andrew Schwilk to the committee as a (no) ordinary member! Andrew will be adding a new string to his bow, and will be working with RV and the VRRA coaching group, on appointments. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you haven't done so already - now is a great time to get onto the <a href="https://myaccount.rugby.com.au/">Learning Center</a> and complete any content that needs updating. Smart Rugby, assistant referee or referee accreditation. Don't worry about the on field assessment - we have a list of you ready to visit as soon as were all on the field - but if you get the exam component done now, that's a great way to be ready to ref. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Heads up - we have another online ed session planned for the 22nd April. More details to come soon.</div>
</div>
